Spring is here, and with it comes warmer weather, blooming plants—and unfortunately, itchy rashes. At Carolina QuickCare, we’re seeing more and more patients dealing with skin irritation from poison ivy, poison oak, and other outdoor exposures. Whether you’re mowing the lawn, clearing brush, or spending more time outside with your family, it’s important to protect your skin and know what to do if you come in contact with these irritating plants.

Common Rash-Causing Plants

🌿 Poison Ivy – “Leaves of three, let it be!” This plant causes an allergic skin reaction from an oil called urushiol, found in its leaves, stems, and roots.
🌿 Poison Oak – Looks similar to poison ivy but often has a bushier appearance. It also contains urushiol and can cause the same type of rash.
🌿 Poison Sumac – Found in swampy areas, this plant has clusters of 7–13 leaves and causes more severe reactions in some people.

Symptoms to Watch For

After contact with these plants, a rash typically appears within 12–48 hours. Look out for:

  • Redness or swelling

  • Itchy, blistering skin

  • Streaky or patchy rash

  • Fluid-filled bumps

The rash is not contagious, but the urushiol oil can stick to clothes, tools, and pet fur—so be sure to wash everything thoroughly!

Prevention Tips

✔️ Wear long sleeves, gloves, and pants when doing yard work
✔️ Learn to identify harmful plants in your area
✔️ Wash your skin and clothes immediately if exposed
✔️ Keep pets away from brush and overgrowth
